Toward a Theory of Intrinsic Computability

چکیده
This paper investigates the foundations of the view that (i) computation theory is a special branch of dynamical systems theory, and (ii) a computational system is a special kind of discrete dynamical system whose specific property, being computational, can be thought to be intrinsic to the dynamics of the system itself. I give a formal explication of the concept of an intrinsic computational system, and I then consider its possible consequences for computability theory and Turing-Church thesis.

An intrinsic treatment of ubiquity phenomena in higher-order computability models
We introduce some simple conditions on typed partial combinatory algebras (viewed as models of higher-order computability) which suffice for an axiomatic development of some non-trivial computability theory, including various forms of the Kreisel-LacombeShoenfield theorem, along with the author’s earlier ‘ubiquity’ theorems which say that a wide range of computability models all give rise to th...
متن کاملIntrinsic Value: Towards A Pragmatic Theory
Intrinsic value is a concept central to the environmentalist movement. Whether one believes that natural objects have intrinsic value is supposed to determine whether one takes a ecocentric or homocentric approach to environmentalism, whether we practice deep or (merely) shallow ecology. Yet this concept is also a center of controversy and confusion. Just what does it mean for something to ha...
متن کاملToward an Intuitive and Interesting Theory Course: the First Step of a Road Map
This paper presents the first step of an attempt in designing intuitive and interesting materials for a theory course. The materials developed cover the AL5 Basic Computability unit of the ACM/IEEE Computing Curricula 2001, and can be used in a stand-alone theory course. This paper describes a “programming approach” to basic computability. Topics include a proof of the Halting Problem and the u...
متن کاملMediating role of intrinsic work motivation in relationship between job commitment and professional ethics with firefighters' extra-role performance
Background: A firefighting job is a demanding job that has a high degree of stress due to constant exposure to life-threatening conditions. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the mediating role of intrinsic job motivation in the relationship between job commitment and professional ethics with extra-role performance among firefighters in Isfahan. Methods: The type of stud...
متن کاملIntrinsic computability over algebraic structures
The notion of computable function can be extended from the natural numbers to other domains, using an indexing. Usually, the choice of the indexing affects the set of computable functions and there is no intrinsic notion of computability over these domains. In this paper, we show that, in contrast, when we extend the notion of computable function to algebraic structures, we obtain an intrinsic ...
